Kathy Blankley Roman

Words, images, feelings, sounds: all perception is tucked away in my psyche until it resurfaces unbidden in my work. My abstract paintings are built up in layers of paint and various mixed drawing media, the images appearing intuitively as I go. It is all about the process and the physical act of creating: becoming the brush, responding to the surface intuitively–then finding the delicate balance between intuition and editing to bring the composition to a satisfying conclusion. Color intrigues me–not in the sense of ‘many’ or ‘bright’–but in the way colors can effect each other, creating luminosity, depth and sometimes even changing the perception of a hue. Earth colors (warm) contrasted with cool tones or their complements, comprise my signature palette. The effect is subtle and full of energy.

Born and raised in Chicago, Kathy is an award winning artist known primarily for abstract acrylic mixed media and encaustic paintings. Her preference for an earthy palette reflects a connection felt since her childhood introduction to the prehistoric cave art of Lascaux. She still carries with her that first sense of awe and wonder, and references to it often appear in her paintings. With a background in calligraphy, graphic design and illustration, her art took a new direction after her retirement in 2010 when she took a course in expressive nonobjective painting with Steven Aimone. She continues to study with him in workshops, most recently at a week-long Master Class Residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, FL. She has also expanded her practice by adding the ancient technique of encaustic painting to her repertoire. Kathy’s paintings have often been described as feeling ancient yet modern, full of motion, with a sense of calm and depth which draws the viewer in. She continues to explore and experiment with other media and ways of creating, using mark and color.

Since late 2011 Roman’s acrylic and encaustic paintings have been shown locally, nationally and online. She received a “Top Ten Artists Award” 2012 in Abstract Artists Gallery’s Annual International Abstracts Competition online and Fourth Place Overall in Light Space & Time’s International Open 2013 and in their Abstracts Competition 2014 online. The Artists Magazine recently awarded her Finalist status in their Annual Competition 2014–Abstract & Experimental Division. Her work is represented in the permanent collection of the Encaustic Art Institute in Cerrillos, NM; she is a Studio Artist at Xanadu Gallery, Scottsdale, AZ www.xanadugallery.com/2013/Artists/ArtistPage.php?ArtistID=5700 and a Gallery Artist at Morpho Gallery, Chicago, IL http://www.morphogallery.com/galleryartists. She is also one of 40 contemporary artists featured in the well received eBook “A Walk Into Abstracts-Vol. 4” by Sue St. John 2012. Kathy currently lives and maintains a studio in Chicago.

Roman’s paintings emerge from a place deep inside and reflect her connection to the world around her. Known for her signature earth tone palette, her paintings, while full of energy, evoke feelings of peace and calm and often a sense of the ancient.
